The Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville offers 26 acres of tropical plants and animals indigenous to the area. A short drive east to the white sands of the South Padre barrier island provides a beautiful day trip for beachgoers, and the border towns of northern Mexico at a similar distance to the south support an unusual array of shopping venues and other tourist attractions.
